ABOUT THE PROJECT

Of Sami origin, much of Ada’s performative work is centered on her indigenous roots explored through the body via movement and sound in space. Her approach is a spiral-circular, where time and space are interconnected just like in traditional societies.

The Artist-In-Residence Lab (AIR-L) by Sunaparanta Goa Centre is designed to nurture creativity, research and experimentation. It offers a space for artists and cultural operators to critically examine existing practices through exchange and dialogue, forging new connections among practitioners across disciplines.

ABOUT PRODUCTION

During her residency at Sunaparanta, Ada worked collaboratively with Antara Majumdar (contemporary dancer) and Divesh Gadekar (sound artist) where they interrogated the origins and meaning of language – studied through a collection of sounds in nature and storytelling. Over several weeks, the three artists visited indigenous festivals, engaged with local ecologists and various ethnic groups with the aim to trace the connection between the loss of biodiversity, language and culture.

Earth Voices invites us to listen to an intermingling of Konkani and Sami language soundscape, while also encouraging us to think about language, and to explore the synergies between the Goan and Arctic world.

ARTISTS

Antara Majumdar is a contemporary dancer and choreographer with a background in philosophy and contemporary dance. For the last decade, Antara has worked with Milanesi dance company – Progetto D’Arte. Her works focus on the pursuit of movement in the valued, and mundane, in premeditated, and the spontaneous. The primary focus of this piece has been to engage with three environments, understand how to represent them in persuasive abstraction, and experiment with variables that we confront in daily routine such as an object, a path, or even a periphery.

Divesh Gadekar has been working in multidisciplinary ways; as life flows with different stages of understanding and experience, his art also takes different shapes in trying to express it with ‘sound, form and visuals’ in multidimensional ways. He has been studying these and other musical instruments, their structure and history since the last few years. His practice is focused on helping to revive these musical instruments that are on the verge of extinction.
