EATNEMEN VUELIE
SONGS FROM THE EARTH
The Norwegian Church banned the traditional sámi sacred singing yoik as the sound of the devil. It was forbidden by the Norwegian state, to use in schools and other public areas. This was a part of the ‘norwegianizing’ of the sámi people, and the language was also forbidden to use in public. This was especially hard from the 1850 up to 1960/70. We see psalms and yoik as 2 sides of the coin, sacred and deepfelt expressions of emotions, events in life, and belief.
